Breeding Cockatiels can be a rewarding experience but it not something to plunge into without full knowlege and preparation.
Never attempt breeding unless the Birds are in tip top breeding condition, in good health and out of molt.Yes even unhealthy birds will breed and produce young but the outcome is dismal.
Never attempt breeding unless the birds are properly housed and correct nest box is used. Pet birds now set up for breeding are no longer pets, they are breeders.Treat them as such they are into themselves and their family, not you.
Breeding age: Although Cockatiels are capable of producing and raising young prior to 18 months of age it is detrimental to their health and well being and that of their young prior to 18 months. Consider this: 6 month Cockatiel =12 yr old human child. 12 month old Cockatiel =15 yr old human child. 18 month old Cockatiel= 20 yr old young adult.
How often: Two consecutive clutches is practiced by responsible breeders with a six month rest period. Exceptions to this rule are: Very small Clutches[2 babies] or pulling babies for hand feeding at 21 days or less in normal clutches [5/6 babies] Parents must be in excellent breeding condition, healthy and no problems with prior clutches such as excessive plucking of chicks, dead chicks in boxes or unthrifty chicks and poor feeding habits of the parents. If all is well then one more clutch can allowed.
Once the birds are set up for breeding: You can expect eggs in a matter of days to several weeks .Let nature take its course the birds know when they are ready.
Checking the Nest Box: Check boxes daily once in a.m. once in p.m. this is to assure the parent birds that it is ok for you to visit when ever you wish, with in reason and they will be used to you once the chicks arrive so you can check on them peacefully.
Incubation is 18 days each fertile egg. Exceptions: Although true incubation is 18 days some hens do not get down to sitting tight untill the 3rd egg is layed sometimes more which extends incubation.
Candling: This is a means to see if the eggs are fertile. Eggs can show life early.By 3 to 4 days bloodlines have started to appear, they are best candled between 5 and 7 days with a small pen type flashlight or candler no need to handle eggs just shine the light close to each egg.Do not toss any eggs that do not look fertile they still can be and even if not are usufull in the box.
