Welcome to the Pet Budgie Page.
Melopsittacus undulatus. [Budgerigar].
The common usage of the name parakeet in reference to the Budgerigar has caused some confusion so lets clear this up once and for all.
The Budgerigar IS a Parakeet BUT there are well over 200 species of Parakeet and one of those specie's is the Budgerigar. So in a nut shell. The Budgerigar is one specie of Parakeet but all the other species of the Parakeets are not Budgerigars.
What is a Pet Budgie?.
Pet Budgerigars are most often the smaller variety. These birds are the direct unaltered ancestors of the Wild Australian Budgerigar. Over the years many colours and combinations of colours have emerged. A few coloured birds other than green are also seen in the wild but due to there brilliance are soon preyed upon by other wild birds.
What is an English Budgie?
English Budgie is a term that was adopted in the US when they first entered this country from England and other parts of the British Isles a few short years after WW2, in the early 1950's.
Prior to this time the Wild type [Pet Budgerigar] was very much present and had been for many years. These new birds [English Budgerigars ]were brought here at great expence by a few exhibitors of the day.
It has pretty much been established today to refer to these birds as Exhibition Budgerigars and the term English has been dropped.
The Exhibition Budgerigar is the same specie as the Pet Budgerigar. The Exhibition Budgerigar evolved through selective breeding to enhance certain features. Basically both are the same bird.
Before leaving be sure to check out the All About Budgies you will find more information that can be applied to your wonderful Pet Budgies after all a Budgie is a Budgie.
